How does DAD actually work?
When you first launch DAD it will ask where you'd like it to look for your files. Give it a few folders and it will start crunching those files to extract all the often hidden extra information and will create your personal media file index. DAD will translate most metadata formats, enabling information about your photos, music, movies, docs and contacts to be stored together. Doing so, your files absorb additional layers of information from each other giving them greater meaning and relevance. It also makes finding your files so much easier.
Your index is just the start. The true power of DAD lies within its private Index Exchange. Using DAD Discovery you can easily exchange all or part of your index with your family and friends and they can share parts of their indexes with you. Your combined index stays with you on your computer meaning you can search across yours and your friends computers instantly. Any files you find that you want, hit request and the file's owner will be notified of your requirement. Got some files you want to send to others? Hit Send and select who should receive them. It's that simple.
Where your friends or family are not on the same local network as you DAD will send files using our private web service. Unlike more cloud based storage services or social networks, the DAD web service is not directly accessible and only acts as a temporary storage facility.
Your index is a bridge connecting all your files together, and where indexes are exchanged, it brings those files together too. Photos connected to friends, friends connected to files, files connected to videos, videos connected to music tracks…. yours, your friends, your family.
We have spent considerable time developing a set of APIs to enable other developers to provide new and exciting solutions with the DAD Core - this comprises the Index Engine, Index Exchange, Discovery and Rules.
